Last week, my sister asked for my help on her final project for her art history subject. The project consisted on creating a new style of art. This considering the times we live on. The political, social, and economical environment. It got me thinking, about contemporary art. Specifically in Mexico. I can’t speak for art in other countries, because sadly, lately I haven’t been able to travel other places. But in here, it’s my personal opinion that we are in a creative rut. I’m not sure if it has something to do with the environment in which we are living. We hear in the news about the violence that’s going on, we manifest a lot because of the injustice that we see happening, we dislike our political options but don’t intend to do anything about it; our economy is wobbly at best. So, instead of creating new things in art that reflect this, we are going back to the things that we know. Feels like we as a society are trying to go back to our comfort zones.
I know that art encompasses so many things. Including painting, sculpture, cinema, photo, music, even fashion. But even if there are some new things (I can’t generalize, that’s not intelligent) most of us are not moving forward. I read an interview on Elle USA a few weeks ago to Fran Lebowitz in which said that young people are not making anything new. We think it’s new, but in reality it isn’t. It’s not creating an expression of distaste and awe in older people. That hit me like a ton of bricks. Because I believe it’s true.
So, where did we decide to stay in a creative rut? Can we blame the environment? Can we blame the economy? Can we blame globalization? Maybe there are so many of us trying to show what we do and love, that we are getting lost in the crowd.
Why aren’t we creating a new style of art? Is it because we don’t want to? Or maybe because we are afraid of being mocked? Why are we getting bombarded with these types of images online instead of new creations?
There is so much undiscovered talent out there. We should celebrate it, and get out of this uncreative trend we are in. Get back the hope and do something with it. Start feeling again, and sharing those feelings.
Something to ponder upon
Lots of Love
